Project: Hough Elementary School Community Pool Facilities
Location: Vancouver, Washington
Client: Hough Elementary School
Scope: New Construction
Completed: 1997

Through meetings with the local community, CDA identified the type of pool and the activities they desired to be supported by the new facility. One goal was to attach the pool to the existing neighborhood school to provide a swimming program for the students. Another objective was swimming activities for the community-at-large. As funding was provided through a local community foundation, it was imperative to keep the project within budget.

The exterior is designed to reflect the existing school and neighborhood while still having its own character. The exposed, open member trusses give the interior a high, spacious feeling. The design also used dormer windows to bring natural light to the center of the pool area to reduce the reliance on artificial lighting during daylight hours.

A separate driveway and parking for the pool was provided, and located to not interfere with the usual school activities. Additionally, there is a separate entrance so the pool can be open without the school grounds being open. The pool itself is 25 yards long and uses an ozone purification system.
